Q: Is their a standard on what color of shoe you should wear with a particular color suit? I know black is the most widely worn color shoe, but what color suit goes with a brown shoe?
A: Black shoes will work with suits that are black, navy and taupe. Brown shoes will generally work with blues, khakis, light greens and other shades of brown.
It is hard to have a standard. So many times the tones and shades in a suit/sport coat/slacks can dictate color of shoes. Also, the highlighting through shirt/tie selection will change shoe selection.
Q: When wearing French-cuff shirts, how much cuff should I be showing?
A: About a half inch of material should show beyond the sleeve of the jacket when the arm is at one's side. When no shirt shows at the wrist, the arms tend to look long and take away from the look you are trying to accomplish.
Q: I recently lost a lot of weight, and now my shirt collars are a tad big. Should I just pull my tie a bit tighter? Can a tailor fix a collar? Or do I need to splurge and go out and buy all new dress shirts?
A: A tailor can't really help you. If it were a slight adjustment, you might have the collar button moved, but more than a fraction and it will throw the placket off-center. Tightening your tie will simply bunch the collar. Bite the bullet and buy shirts in your correct size.
